Summer 2010A Message from the Minister
Dear Friends,
Summer is a time of year that calls for lightness of being as many adjust their usual routines and activities to relax, refresh, rejuvenate, and recharge. “R” and “R” is the goal of the season, which expresses as vacations and getaways for rest and renewal. Sometimes, however, our vacations can be so full of things to do that we find ourselves even more tired than before we went. How do we balance our lives in ways that nurture? How do we create the serenity needed to deal with the challenges, pressures, and demands of our modern world?
The answer has come from many great teachers who consistently encourage us to be still, rest our minds and relax our bodies. The Master, our Wayshower Jesus Christ, invites us to take time to be still, get in touch with Spirit, do not worry but “look at the birds of the air... consider the lilies of the field... and strive first for the kingdom of God.”
This summer let us be willing to slow down, refocus, be present, center in peace and be free from worry. We will use the book, Strength in the Storm: Creating Calm in Difficult Times by Eknath Easwaren to help us learn to still our minds and create serenity and peace. “The key to facing challenges,” Easwaran maintains, “is the mental state with which we meet them.” Steadiness of mind is a practical skill to demonstrate as we face turmoil with courage, confidence, and compassion. A truly calm mind can weather any storm.
We will begin this book study Sunday, July 11 and continue through August 22. In addition to Sunday lessons, small groups will practice the principles and tools that will be introduced each week. We will continue to have two Sunday services through the summer with the exception of July 4 and August 29. A special service created by Melanie Jewell and Connie Mitchell is planned for July 4th and our Theater of the Spirit ministry will be doing the program on August 29.
May the peace and love of God shine brightly in all your hearts. My blessings and prayers are with you always. Have a wonderful summer.
With much love and heartfelt gratitude,
Rev. Roger
